Vocabulary contests for children in USA were launched in 1994. The Vocabulary Bee is a word-meaning contest (in multiple-choice format) open to children of Indian origin who are in grades 1 through 12. Younger children are encouraged to participate on an equal basis. This contest is especially designed to focus students' attention on the PSAT and SAT exams. Typical words from these exams are used in the contest.

The contests are conducted every year in two steps. First, children participate in a regional contest, conducted in various states throughout USA. Qualified winners of the regional contests are invited to participate in the National Finals. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners from each contest at the Nationals are awarded scholarships of $1,000, $500, and $250 respectively, redeemable in the winners' freshman year of college.

The Vocabulary bee is open to children of Indian origin in grades 1 to 12.  Younger children are encouraged to participate, on equal basis, solely with the aim of familiarizing them with the contest.

Beyond improving English, the contest provides many other benefits such as:

• Meeting other children and making new friends in our community
• Being able to stand up on a stage and talk
• Developing correct English usage
• Learning new concepts
• Improving communication skills
• Improving listening skills
• Developing discipline
• Setting goals and meeting them
• Competing against one’s own ability, not against others
• Recognizing that hard work leads to success more so than innate intelligence
• Realizing that practice makes one perfect

From 2006, the vocabulary contest has been split into Junior and Intermediate based on grade. The grade eligibility is determined as of February 1.  For more details, please see contest rules.
