What is the Young Changemaker Journey Program?

The Young Changemaker Journey (YCJ) program is an initiative of the Young Changemakers of NorthSouth (YCNS). In this program, middle and high school students are provided tools to navigate their Changemaker journey. Once they identify community issues that need to be addressed, they embark on their passion projects to bring change in their local communities.During a Changemaker’s first year, participants will connect with each other monthly to learn about design thinking and Changemaking principles. After they graduate from their first year, Changemakers will receive additional alumni programming to progress their projects further and strengthen connections among fellow Changemakers.

What does the Program Offer?

  • Structured Guidance – YCJ has a structured curriculum that was developed in conjunction with Bill Drayton’s Ashoka Foundation, which guides young Changemakers step by step: from identifying their passion to taking the first step, creating positive change in their communities, and sharing their experiences — all while receiving constant feedback that helps them build and maintain momentum.
  • Youth Empowerment – The YCJ program aims to empower youth to commit to making positive changes in the world.
  • Mentorship – YCJ participants are guided by adult mentors as well as youth mentors who have previously been through the program.
  • Community– Over the course of every changemaker journey the participants connect and learn from each other and their mentors and build a strong sense of community and belonging.

Continuing your Changemaker Journey

Since 2019 several cohorts of students have gone through the Young Changemaker Journey. Some of the YCJ projects have included implementing neighborhood fitness programs, bringing in STEM education and projects to underserved school districts, decreasing homelessness, providing refurbished devices, encouraging reduced use of plastic, supporting the elderly, arranging events for the special needs community, and many more. Several of our YCJ graduates move on to the following year as mentors for the incoming cohort, sharing and growing their experience.

FAQs

There is no set age limit for changemaking. We recommend that 5th to 12th graders might be the age group that would enjoy this program the most.

Yes. Anyone willing to be a changemaker can join this program. They can be at any stage of the changemaking journey and get personalized mentoring to implement or scale up their project.

Most of the kids who have been with us have been kids residing in the US.

In a world defined by change, this program provides skills needed to lead a change, not just adapt it. Monthly interactive learning sessions provide tools and resources that will help your child become a young changemaker. During their journey, young individuals acquire a multitude of skills including leadership development, creativity, collaboration, organizational, communicational skills, and being involved in a journey of giving back to the community. Changemakers that have completed the first year of the program have shared that they have improved on their presentation skills, public speaking ability, resourcefulness, and learned how to be a mentor to others. We believe that these new skills and experiences will be a differentiator in college applications and prepare them for a changing future.

The monthly learning sessions are not counted towards volunteer hours. But the program would provide opportunities to obtain volunteer hours through North South Foundation. Following one cycle of this program, the young individual will have opportunities to mentor other young changemakers, which will add to volunteering hours/opportunities.
